- Who Invented The Game Basketball And In What Year
- where was he from
Dr. James Naismith of Springfield, Massachusetts didn’t think that winter working in his office and an assignment given to him by his boss will make him a famous inventor of a world famous game.
Behind every great invention is an interesting story and let us know the story behind the invention of the Basketball Game.
It was cold winter months in the YMCA and Dr. Luther. H. Gulick, the superintendent of Dr. James Naismith of Springfield, Massachusetts has given him an assignment.
He wanted him to invent a new game which the boys can play indoor as the weather was not good outside.
Dr. James Naismith decided that he wanted to invent a game which will concentrate on the skills than on the strength.
Dr. James Naismith remembered that he used to play a game in his childhood, which was called,” Duck on a Rock”. The game is basically about finding many small rocks and then threw the rocks on a targeted place like a top of the large boulder or a tree stump.
With the help of his wife and with memories of his childhood game, he created a new game called it as ‘Basket Ball’.
He made a few changes from the basic idea. He had to engage the young boys in the winter months. so he created the game in such a way that it was fun and enjoyable.
The objective of the game was to throw the basketball into the fruit baskets nailed into the lower railing of the gym balcony. The first game was played on 21st December, 1891 with 9 players in each team.
The first game had only 13 rules created by the inventor. The 9 players were on each team because the class strength was only 18 and he divided the class into two teams so it had 9 players in each team.
The first game was interesting because there was only one person who could score a goal and mark his name in the history.
William R. Chase scored the only goal of the game from 25 feet away from the basket… becoming the first person to score a goal during a game in basketball history.
The match finished with a team score of 1-0 as no one could score except William R. Chase.
The basketball, which we play is a much-transformed version of the original one. Like all the good things it has also gone through many transformations.
When the first match was played it had some interesting stories. Every time a point was scored the game was halted as someone should bring a ladder to retrieve the ball. Yes, Dr. James Naismith had designed a fruit basket. Later the bottom of the fruit basket has been removed.
The first public basketball game was played in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 11, 1892.
The original basketball game was played with a soccer ball. These round balls from “association football” were made, at the time, with a set of laces to close off the hole needed for inserting the inflatable bladder after the other sewn-together segments of the ball’s cover had been flipped outside-in.
However, the laces could cause the ball to bounce and became unpredictable with the movement. The dribbling was also inconvenient. Eventually, a lace-free ball construction method was invented, and this change to the game was endorsed by Naismith.
As a part of any great inventions, Dr. James Naismith and his boys didn’t think they will become a part of the history. Hope you liked the little story behind the invention of Basket Ball.
