Turn on the TV and you’ll hear commentators, scientists, historians and economists speculate about the future.
Will the stock market go up or down? Will the latest revolution succeed or fail? How will global warming affect us? What about the latest technological device — how will it change our lives?
No one knows for certain what will happen tomorrow, of course, but we can make some good guesses by looking at the past.
We’ll have to deal with a changing and unpredictable climate and find new sources of energy that don’t deplete the planet. There are likely to be more upheavals and revolutions when people are not content with their lives. And there may be a struggle between rich and poor over resources.
Despite uncertainty about the future, the past can help us understand and find ways to cope with whatever events become — the next big deal.
